Computer Programming Schools
How Will You Stand Out?
Computer programmers are as important as they've ever been. But they face more competition, and thanks to the Internet, the competition is both domestic and international.
The big strategic challenge that you need to solve, with every move you make as a prospective programmer, is how will you stand out as a job candidate? That objective should inform every choice you make in navigating your way through one of the computer programming schools.
Real World Experience
One of the strongest assets you can build for your resume is real world programming experience, even as you attend school. Employers want to see that you can work as part of a team and successfully meet deadlines and deliverables. They want to see as much business savvy and expertise on your resume as you can acquire, because they hire programmers to solve business problems, not programming problems. At least one recruiter has said he likes to see double majors in business and computer science.
Specialties of Interest
According to the US Department of Labor, these are some of the specialties for which demand for programmers is likely to be strongest:
Object-oriented programming continues to save development dollars.
Cyber-security, because of recent massive security breaches, can make or break businesses.
Wireless applications show exponential growth.
Multimedia technology grows along with bandwidth and available platforms.
Graphic user interface (GUI) work needs to simplify and empower the technologically shy.
Expert systems are of interest as they become embedded in more products.
C++ and other object-oriented languages such as Java gain in use.
Newer, domain-specific languages that apply to computer networking, database management, and Internet application development are of interest.
In short, the Department of Labor suggests, it's wise to obtain vendor-specific or language-specific certification, get as much term and summer work experience as possible, monitor trends and keep skills up to date.
