About Alaska
Alaska has about 640,000 residents occupying 570,274 square miles of land. Alaska is the largest state in the United States, about 2.3 times the size of Texas, and about one-fifth the size of the lower 48 states. The name Alaska derived from the Aleut word “Ayeska,” meaning “great land.” There are plenty of outdoor recreational activities to do in Alaska, including skiing, snowmobiling, canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, hiking, mountain and rock climbing, biking, and even scuba diving. Alaska is also the dogmushing capital of the world, with a dogmushing trail that is over 1,000 miles long. Temperatures in Alaska during the summer months range from 60 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall arrives early at Alaska’s high latitude. Late August and September start to cool off significantly and encounter slightly fewer hours of sunlight.
