About Maine
The largest of the New England states, Maine is about 320 miles long and 210 miles wide. It is almost as big as all of the other five New England states put together. Maine has 17 million acres of forestland, and boasts 3,500 miles of beautiful coastline. Maine also has more than 60 lighthouses including the Portland Head Light, made famous by New England postcards. Maine is also recognized as one of the most beautiful and healthful states in the country. Maine’s four seasons offer a healthy, invigorating environment for its residents, with one of the most comfortable summer climates in the U.S. with temperatures averaging about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer nights are usually cool and comfortable. In the winter, the temperatures average about 22 degrees Fahrenheit, but prolonged cold spells are rare. Snow can fall in Maine anywhere from October to March. The fall is the peak time of year in Maine and in the New England region with its famous fall foliage. Daytime temperatures in the fall average around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with nights cooling off into the 40s.
