Computer Support Specialists: Help When You Need It
Many computer trade schools can prepare you to be a computer support specialist or help-desk technician. You'll be on call to interpret problems and provide technical support for hardware, software, and systems. You might have to provide support over the phone, or use automated diagnostic programs. You might work directly for the company that is using the computer equipment, or may be on staff at the vendor that provided the equipment.
To prepare you for this work, many computer trade schools can teach you to install, modify, clean, and repair computer hardware and software, monitors, keyboards, printers, and mice. You can also learn how to write training manuals, and train computer users to use new computer hardware and software.
"My Cupholder Broke"
These jobs take patience. Many have heard how one help desk technician who was asked by a user how to replace the broken cupholder on his computer. Questioning revealed that the user thought his CD drive was a cupholder.
Systems Administrators: Keeping Us Together
A step up from help desk technician is a system administrator. The job typically takes extra education and experience. A network or computer systems administrator designs, installs, and supports an organization’s LAN (local-area network), WAN (wide-area network), network segment, Internet, or intranet system.
All of these jobs are in demand, and a computer trade school can prepare you for their challenges. |
